As refiners worldwide see remarkable fluctuation in crude oil prices and continued demand for clean transportation fuels, a sound knowledge of Hydroprocessing (HP) technology and its impact on the refinery is essential. This course provides an in-depth yet practical review of hydrotreating technology in a crude oil refinery. The lecturers will cover topics ranging from the chemistry of hydrotreating to a discussion of the design of commercial processes and reactors. The programme will address diesel, jet fuel and naphtha hydrotreating, feed pre-treatment for conversion units and consider hydrogen, production and purification.

In order to comply with regulations and to optimise margins, refineries and terminals have to blend components of different qualities and values to meet stringent product specifications, without product quality ‘give-away'. The relevance of product quality specifications will be covered in detail, along with calculation methods for estimating the qualities of blended products. This also includes gaining an understanding of the valuation of blendstocks and their relevance in producing products in the most economical way. In addition the blending of biofuels with conventional components will be addressed, together with the different physical ways of blending in a tank farm. Finally quality performance monitoring will be covered along with estimation of the cost of quality giveaway.
