Location: Linthicum Community Library / United States

Being unemployed can be stressful, frustrating, and depressing. For many, having a job brings dignity and offers individuals a strong sense of self-worth. Very often, mental health professionals have clients who are unemployed or will be facing an imminent job loss. Job loss and unemployment are stressors that can have significant biopsychosocial implications. Since career has become so intertwined with individuals' daily life, it is important for mental health professionals to recognize the issues that come with job loss and how to help individuals cope.

This course is designed specifically to help practitioners with specific strategies to aid in job searches and interventions that reduce discouragement, depression, and anxiety. In this course, we will:

Define essential terms such as labor force, unemployment, long-term unemployment, underemployment
Examine the value of work for people on psychological and social levels
Look at the consequences of job loss from an environmental perspective
Identify effective coping strategies for clients
Examine cultural distinctions
Discuss practice implications for mental health professionals
