Everything around us comes from somewhere: it has a past and a future, a place that it comes from, and a place that it is going to. At Storefront, the “how to” becomes the “why do”: this class is about learning how to sharpen a small carving knife, and using that knife to carve a form out of a piece of wood. Why? Because learning to take care of a tool, how a knife should be sharpened, how wood behaves under a dull blade and a sharp edge, and the techniques for refining the surface of wood are all physical manifestations of understanding the order of the world, and our place in it.

Designer Rafi Ajl was born and raised in the wilds of Brooklyn, New York. After experiencing the green pastures of Amherst, Massachusetts, he escaped to the Pacific Coast. Ten or so years later, with a little bit of there and elsewhere, here he remains. Rafi recently completed a MFA in Design from California College of the Arts, with a focus in industrial design, theory, and writing. His background is in both the making of things and the thinking about them – concept and theory meet the tablesaw. By bringing together practice and design, Rafi explores both widescale change and small interventions into daily practice that can help us create a more resilient and joyful world.
